There are a lot of new cyclists out there. With the COVID lockdowns, closed gyms, and social distancing a lot of people have turned to bikes to get outside for mental and physical health. More people on bikes is awesome. We love you and welcome to the club!

With all the new people on bikes, we wanted to give you some tips on how to translate your previous fitness routines over to the bike. Even if you’re just starting your fitness journey and not transitioning from another sport, these tips will help.

In this episode, we lay out a simple framework to get started:

  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Planning

Safety

With safety, we go over the essentials you need to safely get started. From equipment to where you go for your first rides. Most people think about helmets, but listen for some other items that you may not have originally thought of.

Comfort

Bikes should be fun, if you’re pedaling and not smiling, let’s talk. It’s hard to have fun when you’re not comfortable. We go over some things you can do to ensure you’re comfortable and touch on adaptation timeframes. Plus, we give you some resources to get some help with seats and getting you fitting on your bike.

Planning

Bikes have a lot of moving parts, literally and figuratively. Ensuring you have a good ride and you meet your goals requires some planning. We’ll talk you through some things to prepare for and ways to plan to succeed and plans for failure.

Have Fun

Getting started can feel overwhelming, we’re here for you. If you have questions, make sure you ask. Welcome to bikes, we can’t wait to see you on the road or trails or where ever 2 wheels take you. Stay safe, stay comfortable, plan ahead and have fun!
